HOV LAYNE MANNEQUIN

All out of boredom, gentlemen, all out of boredom.
- Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes From Underground

UPI reports the following on February 4:

Deputy not fooled by carpool mannequin

Deputies in New York's Suffolk County said a woman was ticketed for driving in a carpool
lane alone with a mannequin disguised as a passenger.

Mike Sharkey, Suffolk County Sheriff's Office chief of staff, said Deputy Robert Howard was driving Tuesday on the Long Island Expressway in Islandia when he grew suspicious of a car in the high-occupancy vehicle lane because the passenger was wearing a visor and sunglasses despite the cloudy weather, Newsday reported Thursday.

Sharkey said Howard pulled over Kathleen Frascinella, 61, of Mount Sinai, N.Y., and discovered her only passenger was a mannequin dressed in clothing including a blazer and a scarf.

Frascinella was issued a $135 citation for operating a vehicle in the HOV lane without a passenger.

"At first glance, this may seem humorous, but it is not a joking matter when you drive off with a ticket," Sheriff Vincent DeMarco said.

This reminds me...

People tried doing that here in Minnesota when we first started HOV lanes some years ago; and I believe there was a case where a driver tried to claim the dog was a passenger . . . . .

Bob, I am consistently amazed at the ingenuity of human beings.

I'll admit, this isn't the 1st time I've heard of it being done.

Old Bob, the dog claim does make some sense given the way some people treat their pets.

Had to look up info about this song, because I hadn't heard of it. Still, I somehow knew after watching the video that Syd Barrett was involved.

Ah, yes, Mary knows her Pink Floyd.

Years ago, 'dummys' were sold to women as a way to deter crime. Some women were afraid to drive alone, especially at night.

I thought it was hooey until I had to drive home at 2am from my waitressing job. I then wanted a dummy, a can of mace and a gun.

Lola, that is great protection for women alone at night. Never thought of it in that context.

There is a stretch of highway between northern Idaho and eastern Washington where the local cops used to park a patrol car...after passing it for about the sixth time, I realized that the "cop" sitting in the driver's seat was a wooden dummy in a police uniform and hat.

By the way, did you see where Giacometti's L'Homme qui Marche, which you have pictured on your masthead, just sold at Sotheby's for over $104 million (U.S.)?

Am I in the wrong line of work.

Police car dummy: It appears the cops down there also have the ingenuity of the lady caught with hers. If there was a dummy, where was the officer all that time? Having a nap in the back seat, perhaps.

Holy smokes! I am impressed by your catch-recognition of Giacometti. My humble opinion, Counselor... don't change jobs. The phonies, glitterati, pseudo-intellectuals, etc - that comprise a large part of the art/auctioning world - would, on the balance of probabilities, cause you much distress.

Sidebar: Was fascinated by Giacometti's aforementioned statue after seeing it on the cover of a book I read by William Barrett, entitled "Irrational Man".
